Managing the risks from air pollution

Managing the work health and safety (WHS) risks from air pollution in the workplace is a duty for anyone conducting a business. And with the recent public health situation resulting in a more time spent indoors, it’s more important than ever to make sure that you and your workers are breathing is safe.

Air pollution is caused by both natural sources (including bushfires, dust storms and pollen) and human activities (including wood burners and motor vehicles). More importantly, air pollution is a hazard and to meet your WHS duties it needs to be monitored.

Safe Work Australia have created recommendations on how to meet these duties – in the case of air pollution, identifying the hazards via indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring, determining the associated risks based on the results and the steps to eliminate or minimise these risks.

Looking to conduct your own IAQ investigations? Instruments such as the YES Air 8-channel IAQ monitor  from CET detects common air pollutants including carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, sulphur dioxide, lead and particles (PM10 and PM2.5), allowing you to make a comprehensive assessment of the air in your work space.

View the fact sheet on the Safe Work Australia website below for further information on how to best reduce your risks.
